The Spiritual Battle For Our Health: Waking Up From The Deception
We live in a time where sickness seems normal. Cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and autoimmune disorders are no longer rare; they’ve become common, normalized, and almost even expected. If you’re like me, you know deep down in your heart that this isn’t how God designed us or what He wants for us.
The Misconception of “Medicine Only”
One of the biggest lies we’ve been taught is that pills and prescriptions are our only hope. We’ve been conditioned to believe that healing must come from a bottle, that our symptoms are random, that we are just unlucky, or that lifestyle and nutrition don’t really matter. The truth is, our healthcare system has become one of the most profitable industries in the world. When sickness becomes a business model, the focus naturally shifts from prevention and true healing to managing symptoms for as long as possible.
But that’s not how God designed us. He created our bodies with astonishing wisdom, self-healing, and self-regulating ability if we simply give them what they need. Nourishing food, clean water, sunlight, movement, rest, peace, and trust in Him.
Mainstream medicine rarely emphasizes these things because they can’t be patented or sold. There is no “Big Broccoli,” only “Big Pharma!”
How did we get here?
The Great Deception
From the very beginning of time, the enemy’s tactic has been deception. In the garden, Satan didn’t use a sword-he used food! He whispered lies that made what was harmful look desirable. It wasn’t the apple that was harmful; it was the choice to disobey!
Today, not much has changed. We are surrounded by foods that look beautiful, smell irresistible, and promise satisfaction, but they destroy us from the inside out.
Ultra-processed foods, sugary drinks, and endless chemical additives dull our minds, weaken our bodies, and numb our spirits. The result? A world filled with inaccurate thinking, anger, anxiety, depression, addiction, and more illnesses and diseases than we have ever experienced.
We then go to the doctor, who we have been programmed to trust with our health, and are not even usually asked about our diet. We are not asked about our stress levels. We are not asked how much sleep we get, etc. We are typically asked what our symptoms are and then given a prescription, and are told we will probably be on them for the rest of our lives.
The truth is, this is not just a health crisis-it’s a spiritual one. We cannot disobey God’s natural laws for our health and expect to be well.
The Enemy’s Strategy
If the enemy can keep us sick, tired, and distracted, he can keep us from living out our God-given purpose. When you’re battling fatigue or chronic illness, it’s hard to serve others, to worship with energy, or to step into your calling.
Looking For Answers In the Wrong Place
As much as I wish the above picture were what we were handed when we went to the doctor, that just isn’t the case! Expecting accurate health advice from most modern doctors is a bit like asking a firefighter to build your house. They’re trained to rush in during emergencies and put out the flames, but not necessarily to help you design a structure that won’t burn down in the first place.
Doctors are often compassionate and well-meaning, but most are trained to diagnose and prescribe, not to teach people how to prevent illness through God’s natural laws. The wisdom we need to live in true health doesn’t come from a pill bottle-it comes from the One who designed our bodies with the ability to heal when nourished, rested, and cared for as He intended.
A Time Of Knowledge and Grace
We are SO blessed to be living in a time when there is so much knowledge available to us.
For centuries, people didn’t understand how the body worked, or how food and lifestyle affected our health and mind. But today, we have access to incredible information, right at our fingertips, that confirms what God’s word has said all along: when we honor His natural laws, the body heals and thrives.
We can study nutrition, learn about the microbiome, discover the healing power of plants, and understand how rest, sunshine, and movement all contribute to wellness. What a blessing to live in an age where the truth about natural healing is being uncovered, revealed, and shared so freely!
“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” -John 8:32
The Simple Truth About Health
There are countless theories out there about how to get healthy, lose weight, or prevent disease. It can feel confusing and even overwhelming at times - keto, low-carb, paleo, carnivore, etc. I will not get into those here, but when you strip away the noise, one truth has remained steady from Eden to today: God’s original diet still works.
Science continues to confirm what scripture has shown us all along - that a diet centered on whole, plant-based foods supports healing, energy, and longevity. Those who say they cannot tolerate plants or that this diet doesn’t work for them typically have dysbiosis, which means an imbalance in the gut microbiome, but that’s a discussion for another time!
-Studies show that people following a whole-food, plant-based diet have significantly lower risks of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers.
-In places known as the Blue Zones - regions where people live the longest, healthiest lives - most eat 90-95% plant-based.
-The American College of Lifestyle Medicine and numerous peer-reviewed studies confirm that plant-based eating can not only prevent but even reverse chronic diseases like coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes.
It’s not about perfection - it’s about returning to the foods God made: fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes. These are the foods that bring life, clarity, and joy.
When we align our choices with God’s design, our bodies begin to heal, and we are better able to serve Him and discern spiritual things. I have indeed found this to be true in my own life, as I have made simple, sustained, healthier choices.
Health isn’t complicated - it’s a gift waiting to be reclaimed.
“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” - 3 John 1:2
